HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 2004 ICPE

Bordeaux 2004 — An ICPE for the Ages
By Mark H. Epstein, ISPE Executive Secretary

What a marvelous conference! More than 850 people participated in ISPE's largest annual meeting — the 20th International Conference on Pharmacoepidemiology and Therapeutic Risk Management, held at the Bordeaux Conference Center, Bordeaux, France, August 21-25, 2004. The unqualified success of this year's meeting was predicated on good science, engaging presentations, provocative discourse, solid networking, a memorable evening at the Chateau Giscours, and unbelievable luncheon buffets — the wine wasn't bad either.

The 20th ICPE was the largest meeting in every way — most abstracts received and accepted, most attendees, and longest days. The evaluations received from attendees confirm the success of this meeting. And the attendees came from all over the globe: 51.6% Western Europe; 38% North America; 6.3% Pacific Rim; 1.9% Eastern Europe; and 2.2% rest of the world.

Kudos to Nicholas Moore, FISPE, Chair, Scientific Program Committee, and Annie Fourrier-Reglat, Chair, Local Host Committee, Nichole Hartnell, Chair, Student Council, Robert Vander Stichele, EuroDURG, Cees Schep, FISPE, and Nancy Dreyer, FISPE, Co-Chairs Development Committee, abstract reviewers, invited speakers, presenters, panelists, moderators, sponsors and exhibitors, and countless others for their dedication and commitment to make this year's meeting an unqualified success and a memorable experience.

Other memories from Bordeaux include the birthday cakes served to 700 members celebrating ISPE's 20th annual meeting at the Chateau Giscours, an over-subscribed student dinner at a local Bordeaux restaurant, a superb job by the Public Relations Committee (Yola Moride, FISPE, Chair), a well-organized EuroDURG poster walk, the initial student skills workshops, and more than 200 registered for each of the pre-meeting courses, and the nice words about the ISPE staff from the attendees.

Now it's on to Nashville in August 2005. Y'all come!
