Increased Student Activities at ICPE in Bordeaux

By Kevin Haynes, Chair, Student Council

There were lots of activities for students to get involved in at this year's Annual ISPE meeting in Bordeaux. The events started out with two student skills workshops held by Brian Strom, FISPE, and Tom MacDonald, FISPE. Brian discussed the art of writing grants that get funded, while Tom literally showed us how not to give a scientific presentation (for details, please see article by Anoop Shah elsewhere in this issue of Scribe). Many students participated in the advanced topics in Pharmacoepidemiology course. Over 65 students gathered for dinner on Monday night at the conference. This was an exceptional showing and a testament to the growth of student involvement within ISPE.

The Student Council met and officially announced Kevin Haynes of University of Pennsylvania, USA, to the position of Chair, representing the students to the Academic Council and the ISPE Board of Directors. Aurelie Molia of Regional Pharmacovigilance Center, Reims, France was elected as the new Co-Chair. The Council discussed the newly adopted policy on creating local student chapters. Student chapters provide better access of ISPE resources for emerging scholars. The benefit to ISPE is the early recruitment and exposure to emerging pharmacoepidemiologists. Please contact Kevin Haynes (khaynes@cceb.med.upenn.edu) for information on starting a local chapter at your institution.
