Drug utilization (DU) research intends to support health authorities in the development of evidence-informed pharmaceutical policy and practice guidelines, with the interest of the patients and communities in mind. DU data is often challenging to access for researchers, in particular in resource-restricted settings. The EuroDURG (European Drug Utilization Research Group) community initiated an action to increase access to DU data during the EuroDURG Conference in Glasgow in November 2017. Afterwards, a DU data working group with global representation was created aiming to improve the Declaration and to develop a strategy for dissemination. During the 2018 ISPE Conference in Prague, the workshop was organized, which aimed to discuss the challenges of accessing DU data in different parts of the world, to identify barriers and enablers and to propose strategies to address these. From the workshop findings, a final version of the Declaration was presented at the EuroDURG conference in Szeged, Hungary in 2020. This was followed by an engagement with ISPE with their endorsement of the Declaration secured in February 2022.
