As we approach the Annual Meeting in Milan, the ISPE year is drawing to a close - and with it, my term as Chair of the Strategic Planning Committee. This is my last piece in this role, and it feels like the right moment to look back at our collective accomplishments in implementing the Strategic Plan since last year’s meeting in Washington DC in 2025. It has been a productive year, and none of this progress would be possible without the dedication of our committee leads, core members, and ISPE members volunteering their time for the good of the Society – THANK YOU. Celebrating a year of Strategic Plan progress
he first year of implementing ISPE's Strategic Plan has seen major progress across the Society, with committees translating ambitious goals into concrete accomplishments. This work reflects the dedication of volunteers throughout ISPE, and I want to take this opportunity to thank all of our committees and their leaders for the time, energy, and expertise they have contributed. The highlights below offer a snapshot of what each committee has helped achieve.
Public Policy Committee (chair: Mehmet Burcu, vice-chair: Grammati Sarri; Goals 1.1, 8.1) built strong momentum across its strategic priorities, launching member-wide calls for Emerging or Advocacy Issues in Pharmacoepidemiology and establishing a working group that will guide ISPE's global advocacy efforts.
Education Committee (chair: Kate Bykov, vice-chair: Emily Bratton; Goal 1.2) delivered a society-wide call for pre-conference course content connected to ISPE's strategic priorities and expanded its programming plans to keep emerging and innovative topics at the heart of ISPE meetings.
Publications & Communications Committee (chair: Taichi Ochi, vice-chair: Linda Kalilani; Goal 2.2) continued to spotlight strategic plan achievements through the member newsletter and LinkedIn, while thoughtfully adapting its publications work to align with ISPE's current priorities and resources.
History & Archives Committee (chair: Eileen Ming, vice-chair: Jonathan Slaughter; Goal 2.1) made significant strides in communicating ISPE's achievements to members, securing dedicated newsletter space and advancing a special collection of papers now in active development.
Executive Committee (chair: Ursula Kirchmayer; Goals 3.1, 4.2, 8.2) completed a comprehensive review of ISPE's activities and refined its approach to gathering input from community leaders, building a strong foundation for strengthening how the Society is organized. The committee identified and prioritized ISPE's key technology needs through a community-wide survey, setting the stage for improvements that will streamline communication and member services.
Strategic Planning Committee (Goals 3.2, 5.1, 6.1) advanced several of the plan's cornerstone efforts, establishing a year-round onboarding/training calendar for ISPE's leaders and members, streamlining the Society's capacity-building work, and shaping a FISPE pledge framework designed to encourage meaningful engagement.
Finance Committee (chair: Jennifer Christian, vice-chair: Mary Beth Ritchey; Goal 4.1) moved forward on diversifying ISPE's revenue, developing a benchmarking survey of peer societies to identify new opportunities to support the Society's growth.
Global Development Committee (chair: Soko Setoguchi; Goal 5.1) worked to embed capacity-building across ISPE's communities, helping RIGs, SIGs, and committees strengthen recruitment, retention, and member engagement.
Sustainability Committee (chair: Maarten Lambert, vice-chair: Chloe Smit; Goal 5.2) brought renewed energy to ISPE's virtual engagement efforts, advancing practices that will broaden participation while supporting the Society's sustainability goals.
Fellowship & Awards Committee (chair: Mary Beth Ritchey; Goal 5.3) expanded access to ISPE by introducing reduced-fee and group-discount options for members from low-income regions and advanced mentorship efforts to support FISPE candidates in underrepresented areas.
Membership Committee (chair: Anne Mobley Butler; vice-chair: Jessica Jalbert; Goal 6.2) delivered outstanding results, finalizing the plan for ISPE's peer mentoring program, expanding in-person networking opportunities, and advancing a new award to recognize mentorship excellence.
Meetings Oversight Committee (chair: Helga Gardarsdottir, vice-chair: Mary Beth Ritchey; Goal 7.1) began its work in earnest, scoping efforts to bring greater global reach and regional relevance to ISPE's meetings.
Development Committee (chair: Nicholas Everage, vice-chair: Daina Esposito; Goal 7.2) is planning activities to boost awareness of ISPE around the Globe and increase the number of ISPE members outside of North America and Europe.
Highlights of the year
A new ISPE Annual Activity Calendar. One of the most visible outcomes of this year's work is the new ISPE Annual Activity Calendar, giving members a single, clear view of the Society's activities throughout the year. We encourage you to explore it and make it part of how you plan your engagement with ISPE. A big Thank you! to the Impact staff and all the community leaders that made this a reality!
Supporting ISPE leaders through onboarding and training. A strong society depends on well-prepared leaders. Over the past year, we have made onboarding and training a priority across all levels of leadership:
Community Leadership onboarding/training took place in October 2025, bringing together leaders across the Society to align on roles, expectations, and strategic priorities.
FISPE onboarding was held on June 11, welcoming all Fellows - including those newly recognized this year - to connect and engage with ISPE's mission and strategic direction.
New Board onboarding is planned for August, ensuring our incoming Board members start their terms with the context and tools they need.
Streamlining how we set strategic direction. This year we also made important progress in how the Society identifies its strategic initiatives. We have worked to streamline these processes and to make sure our strategic directions are clearly reflected in ISPE-sponsored meetings, so that what we say in our plan is visible in what we do. A big shoutout to the Public Policy Committee and the Education Committee for their outstanding work!
Engaging FISPEs and preparing the next generation of leaders. Meaningful engagement of our Fellows has been a central theme of the year. Building on the strong response to the FISPE survey, focus groups are underway this summer to translate your input into concrete recommendations. Many thanks to all the Fellows for their support of these activities. At the same time, we are working to identify and prepare the next generation of ISPE leaders, ensuring the Society's future is in capable and committed hands.
